Woodwind instruments are a family of instruments that make a sound when the musician blows air into or across the mouthpiece.

There are two main types of woodwind instrument: flute instruments and reed instruments. Flute instruments are played by blowing air across the edge of the instrument. Reed instruments have a reed – this is a thin strip of material which vibrates to make a sound when air is blown!

Despite the name, woodwind instruments are not always made of wood and are often made of plastic or metal!
