“Strings” has a number of musical meanings, but the musical examples here are where you can hear the string section of an orchestra particularly well. In an orchestra, the strings comprise violins, violas, cellos and double basses. More generally, strings are the thin, flexible material that are stretched across a resonator which can be plucked or bowed to make a sound, and these stringed instruments can be found in many cultures around the world.
