The electric guitar is a guitar which uses pickups to convert string vibrations into electrical signals. These signals are then sent to a guitar amplifier before being send to a loudspeaker, which converts them into an audible sound.

The amplified electric guitar was first used by jazz guitarists in the 1930s as part of big band ensembles. Since then, the electric guitar has become a crucial part of pop and rock music, as well as electric blues and heavy metal.

One of the most famous electric guitarists of all time was Jimi Hendrix – he is is known for his guitar solos, which could last over five minutes!
