We’re excited to share the news that Minute of Listening is currently working in partnership with the BRIT School, the leading Performing and Creative Arts school in the UK.

The Brit Kids Saturday music production groups in Croydon are working with us to make a brand-new collection created by young people, for young people, to inspire the youngest composers and listeners by showing them what and how their peers are creating new music.

Bea, our Head of Education, visited The Brit Kids in December as they began writing their pieces on the theme of ‘Friendship’ – here’s her update what they got up to…

At the end of 2022, I went on a visit to the Brit School in Croydon to meet the Brit Kids Saturday music production groups.  These groups are working in partnership with Sound and Music to create a brand-new collection for Sound and Music’s ‘Minute of Listening’ website.  Sound and Music have committed to delivering more new resources on their Minute of Listening platform.  This will include collections created by young people, for young people to inspire the youngest composers and listeners by showing them what and how their peers are creating new music.

The Brit Kids are writing their pieces on the theme of ‘Friendship’.  Before starting composing they created mood boards on the theme using words and feelings that describe ‘Friendship’ to them.  They highlighted a mixed set of words and emotions covering positive and negative feelings about friendship to set in music in their pieces.

The two groups of young people are composing their music on computers using either Ableton or Logic.  They have used an incredible range of sounds from electronically sampled sounds, beats and traditional instruments.  Some of them have recorded themselves playing live instruments into their work as well!

The music they are creating is going to make an incredibly varied and exciting collection for Minute of Listening which I can’t wait to share!  Once their pieces are finished, they will select three elements of the music and an activity share with listeners to interact with these new minutes.

Keep an eye on the Minute of Listening Newsletter and Sound and Music website to listen to this collection when it goes live in a few months.
