The trumpet is a member of the brass family. Sound is produced by the musician vibrating their lips in the mouthpiece which in turn makes the air inside the trumpet vibrate. Effectively, the trumpeter is blowing a raspberry! The pitch of the note is determined firstly by the tightness of the lips and secondly by the use of three piston valves, which change the length of the trumpet’s tube containing the vibrating air. Trumpets are commonly used in orchestras, wind bands and jazz ensembles.
