Stringed instruments have a vibrating string or strings which cause sound to be produced. They are often plucked or bowed to create the vibration. They have different pitches. The longer and/or thicker the string, the lower the pitch. If strings are under higher tension the pitch increases. String instruments are quite quiet and so many are needed in an orchestra to produce the loud sounds required.
