Call to composers and sound artists for new minutes of music or sound!

We are looking for one-minute contributions for our next Hull-themed Minute of Listening pack. Help us paint a sonic picture of this special city.

The background

Minute of Listening is an innovative digital resource for primary schools which has been developed by Sound and Music. It provides classes of children with the opportunity to engage in one minute of creative, focused listening each day in their classrooms

We are working in partnership with PRS for Music Foundation as part of the New Music Biennial within this year’s Hull City of Culture celebrations.  We have already created one bespoke Minute of Listening collectionwhich is being used by 60 of Hull’s 70 primary schools as well as a number of special schools and community groups.

Pack #1

The first pack features locally sourced sounds, from field recordings of Scale Lane Bridge and periwinkles in Thornwick Bay, Yorkshire, to pieces composed by local Jez riley French and Phil Codd as well as pieces by John ColtraneBjörk and New Music Biennial composers Anna Meredith and Mica Levi.

The second pack will feature brand new commissions created for the New Music Biennial 2017, that will premiere in Hull at a free festival weekend in July 2017, as well as music created by local schools and community groups as a result of working with the New Music Biennial composers-in-residence Errollyn WallenBrian IrvineEliza CarthyJason Singh and Sam Lee.

Get involved and get featured in Pack #2

We want this collection of minutes to be created by or sourced from musicians, artists and people – including children and young people – living and working in Hull.  It will be a celebration of the creativity and passion that is being unleashed in this City of Culture year!
