Zubin Mehta was born in Bombay in 1936 and received his music training from his father, Mehli Mehta who was a concert violinist and founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. When he was 19, he enrolled at the Vienna State Music Academy, where he graduated with a diploma as a conductor.

He conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at 21, and directed many international orchestras since including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Mehta’s close friends was Ravi Shankar who he first met in Montreal. They continued their friendship and collaborated many times since.
