Shivkumar Sharma is a santoor player and composer from the state of Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. Shivkumar began learning vocals and the tabla from his father when he was aged 5, and started learning the santoor when he was thirteen. He has recorded music for many films and has been very experimental in the music he has created for the santoor.
Shivkumar has played an important role in the development of Indian music. The santoor was a lesser-known Indian classical instrument, in comparison to say the sitar or tabla, but through being a pioneer of the instrument, he has helped make it more popular and changed how it is regarded in the Hindustani classical music world.
