Pierre Bastien

Pierre Bastien is a French composer, visual artist, instrument builder and musician. Pierre creates machines that produce various whirrs, clicks, taps and drones. He began making instruments at an early age using metronomes, cymbals and pulleys. In 1986 he formed an orchestra out of a series of 80 musicians made out of meccano. Bastien incorporates his own live trumpet playing with screen projections of the mechanical musical sculptures/musicians he works with. During his career Bastien has earned himself a cult following and amongst many has collaborated with Jaki Liebezeit, Pierrick Sorin, Issey Miyake, Robert Wyatt and Aphex Twin.
