This minute is a version of an old song that was sung in America during World War One.

During the war, music was a very important way for people to show their emotions and keep their spirits up. Songs were often sung by troops as they marched or while they were waiting in the trenches.

The First World War lasted from 1914 to 1918 and had a huge effect on countries across the world. It was fought between the Allies (British Empire, France, Belgium, Russia and, later, the USA) and the Central Powers of Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey.

During the war, Britain was under attack from huge Germany airships called Zeppelins and there were shortages of basic foods.

Many women worked long hours in factories or on the land during the war, as most young men were away fighting. The important role played by women in the war helped them to eventually win the right to vote!
