Viols are stringed instruments of various sizes that pre-date the violin, viola, cello and double bass. The viol family has frets (like guitars) and has anything from five to seven strings (but most commonly six) which are tuned to different intervals from modern day string instruments. Viols are played with bows and are held in an upright position a bit like the cello!
