A tremolo is essentially a trembling sound! On a bowed instrument, like the cello or violin, it is created by moving the bow backwards and forwards very quickly. For vocalists, it involves a wavy, pitch-fluctuating effect. It can also be achieved on guitars and wind instruments, although this less common.
A tremolo is marked by a note with slashes through its stem. It can be used to create suspense and tension!
