The tabla is a pair of drums used in South Asian traditional, pop and classical music. The drums are made of either hollowed out wood, clay or brass with a goat skin membrane. The black area on the skin is known as the GAB and gives the instrument a wide variety of sounds; the drums can also be tuned. A complex playing technique using combinations of fingers, palms and the heel of each hand results in a very full and expressive sound.
