This is an unusual looking instrument which was invented in the early 20th Century by John Matthias Augustus Stroh. It combines a violin with a resonating chamber and a horn, which help amplify the violin-like sound that it makes. It was invented at a time when it was very difficult to make recordings of the the violin itself because recording technology couldn’t capture the sound well enough. Once electric microphones were invented in the 1920s, the stroh violin fell out of use, although a few people still play it today because of its unusual sound!
