A string orchestra is made up solely of the bowed string section of instruments used in classical music. This normally includes violin players (separated into two different parts), viola players, cello players and double bass players.
String orchestras vary in size from just 12 musicians to 60 or more! Important pieces for string orchestras include works by the composers Mozart, Haydn, Mendelssohn and Benjamin Britten.
