A riff is a melody or chord pattern that is repeated throughout the piece, normally in jazz, rock and pop music. Many rock songs include guitar riffs, such as the famous song ‘Smoke on the Water’ by the band Deep Purple! In classical music, a riff is normally known as an ostinato.
