Portamento is when you carry sound from note to note smoothly and without a break. The word comes from an Italian expression “portamento della voce”, meaning carriage of the voice!
Portamento can be sung or achieved on bowed instruments when you do a very legato (smooth) slide between notes. You can also create this effect on a trombone.
