Oramics is a way of creating sounds from pictures and symbols. It was invented by the composer Daphne Oram in the 1950s and 60s and was named after her. Daphne invented an ‘alphabet of symbols’ and an Oramics Machine that could read the symbols when drawn onto film, so that it could turn them into music and sound. Oramics is an example of a number of pioneering ways of producing electronic music that were being explored at that time!
