Some animals use sound to navigate by. They emit a sound (often very high pitched) and listen as it bounces off objects and returns to their ears. The longer it takes to return to their ears the further away the object; they can then tell the distance between them and the object. Ships and airplanes use a similar idea when they use Radar and Sonar.
