Metre is closely linked to pulse or beat and describes how strong and weak beats are grouped. The first of each group is strong and in the UK we are most used to hearing music in a metre of 2 or 4. We are also very familiar with music in a metre of 3 (for example the waltz). Metres of 5 and 7 are rarely heard in Western music, which makes them more challenging to play and to listen to, but some music from other cultures, such as North Indian classical music, do use these metres!
