Jazz is a musical genre which originates from African American people around the beginning of 20th century. It is known for strong rhythms, syncopation and improvisation. Jazz music can be played on any instrument but often has a “rhythm section” of drums, bass, guitar and piano, with “horns” including trumpet, trombone, saxophone and clarinet. Voices are also commonly used and other instruments such as violin, harmonica and harp could also feature – in fact there are no rules about what instruments can be used in jazz! Jazz music has evolved massively over the years and can be found right across the world. There are a great number of different jazz genres including Dixieland, swing and bebop, to name a few!
