Harmony is created when two or more notes are sounded together to make a chord. Implicit in the definition of harmony is that the combined notes fit together, or are pleasing in some way. Often, a series of chords are used to “harmonise” a melody. Different musical traditions create harmonies in different ways, which is one reason why music from another culture can sound strange to our ears! In Western music, chords and chord combinations usually have patterns that are familiar to us, although sometimes, composers use unexpected combinations that can make us jump!
