The particles in gases are very far apart from one another. Therefore, sound travels slower through gasses than through liquids and solids where the particles are much closer together. Gases spread out to fill up the container that they are in. We can squash (or compress) gases easily. When we hear normally sound is travelling to us in a gas we call air (unless we go swimming).
