People have been playing football for centuries – in 1863 the Football Association published the official rules of football for the first time, but people were playing versions of football long before that.
In medieval times people played a violent form of football, which was probably brought to England in the Norman Conquest.
Football games used to look very different from today. In the 19th century, there were no penalties or referees. Some forms of handball were even allowed! Footballers also wore head gear as part of their strip, which looked a bit like a bobble hat.
