A drum machine is an electronic instrument that re-creates the sounds of percussion instruments, in particular a drum kit. Because the sounds are generated electronically, they can also make unique sounds.

Drum machines are programmed by musicians to play rhythms, including rhythms that would be very difficult for a human to perform!

The very first drum machines were developed in the early 20th Century (including one by the Russian Léon Theremin) and are now often used by musicians, either instead of, or as well as a live drummer.
