Call and response is a musical form. It involves two individuals or groups who take turns to play or sing phrases. Each second phrase is a “response” in the form of a comment or answer to each “call” (1st, 3rd,5th phrases). Call and response is used in all kinds of music, for example, work songs (including sea shanties), folk, Gospel, jazz, classical and world music (such as African chants).
