Time signatures contain two numbers: the top number indicates the number of beats in each bar and the bottom number is a code for what the beat is measured in.
When the bottom number is 4 this means crotchet beats, 8 means quaver beats and 2 means minim beats. So 5/4 means five crotchet beats in each bar!
