Robert Jarvis is a trombonist, composer, and sound installation artist based in the South East of England.
Robert Jarvis began his career playing in a wide variety of spaces – from busking outside to performances in schools, residential home and hospitals.
Early in his career Jarvis worked alongside fellow Kent-based musician Peter Cook on a variety of community based projects before concentrating on his own education projects.
In 1998 he received The Performing Right Society’s Composer-In-Education Award.
From here on he concentrated on composition and the use of found sounds, which he integrated into his compositions, and shifted focus towards installation work for which he received two British Composer Awards.
After receiving a residency at The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden in 2007 he worked on a variety of site-specific outdoor pieces and began a new body of work drawing from scientific data collected from natural processes. His touring bat-inspired Echolocation (2008), and the astronomical aroundNorth (2014) (now permanently installed in the grounds of Armagh Observatory) were both shortlisted for the PRSF New Music Award.
Today, Robert continues to explore new methods for musical creation, attempting to build on his reputation for compositions that entice new appreciations of the sonic landscape and encourage a rethinking of our relationship with our surroundings.
When not creating or installing he can be heard playing with various musicians across different genres including folk, improvisation and popular music.
