Sampling in music is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of a recording and using it like a muisical instrument or sound recording in a new piece of music. Sampling was originally developed by experimental musicians working in the 1950s in music concrete and electronic music, but was taken up by many musical traditions including DJs and hip hop. Originally, musicians used old formats such as tape and vinyl, but sampling is often done digitally using computers or specially-made digital equipment. Musicians might start with an existing piece of music, or might create something themselves that they then sample. Samples could be of anything, from a drum rhythm to a spoken word to a field recording!
